Schembri critical: “A lot of things must change in Maltese football”
This is an interview I did to André Schembri, one of the most famous players of Malta national team.
I talked with him about his national team, of course, and about Armenia, that this evening could realize a dream.
Of course there are very few chances of getting the second place, but one thing is sure: Armenia has never been so close to get qualified to a World Cup.
What do you remember about the two matches against Armenia?
“That they were very difficult matches”.
Which kind of matches were they?
“Very tough matches, especially in Armenia”.
For Armenia it was a very bad defeat: how did you win that match?
“The keys of our success have been tactical discipline and counter attacks”.
What did that win represent for you?
“It was a great satisfaction as the last away win for Malta was in 1993”.
What’s your rating of Armenia team?
“8 out of 10”.
Do you think Armenia could arrive to World Cup?
“Now it’s difficult, but before I believed they were favourites”.
Do they deserve it?
“They deserved to qualify”.
Your personal ranking of the group: Italy, then?
“Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark and Malta”.
How is the situation of Malta national team now?
“The situation is always the same. We have our limits and we try and do the best we can. We are a small country and the players are not professionals”.
Do you think you can grow up ?
“Yes there is always room for improvement but a lot of things must change in Maltese football”.
